Unless you've made up your mind to go in for Dell, I would like to suggest that you buy an IBM Thinkpad instead, even if they cost you a bit more. Acer is also not bad and as far as I know, they used to be the official OEMs for notebooks for IBM. If you know someone who has a Dell, test drive both a thinkpad and the Dell and you'll know the difference. > Any other suggestions of laptops are welcome. I would like one which offers > wifi, atleast 40GB HDD, 15"+ monitor, and till I am sure about linux > compatibility - preferably no Centrino. (The Dell one is probably Centrino > though :-P ). I heard even Dell 600m is nice. Dell tech support is bad and if you want anything other than the basic model, you have to shell out quite a bit and the order would take close to a month after the payment is realised !! And they refuse to take questions regarding linux. If you have the money, I would suggest going in for an apple powerbook instead. You can't get a better machine than that !!
