Hello,
I was just curious about the various data backup systems that are
available for companies that want to
keep large daily backups (400~500GB).

The most widely propagated is naturally Tape Backups. We currently use
DAT tapes that are painfully slow and
have a rather high TCO.
But I personally feel that they are rather expensive (the Sony AIT-4
Tape drive system with 200 GB Tapes
was quoted to me at Rs 2 Lakh) and do not provide enough redundancy
against failure.

Wouldn't it be better to have several (2~3) large (4X250GB with RAID 5)
independent IDE Linux Software Raid
setups on a network for backups?
This way the there would be no single point of failure and if one was to
locate the backup systems
at different locations at the site each with its own UPS backup, they
would provide sufficient redundancy
against hard-disk and other failures in any of the backup systems.
How would this sort of system compare against a conventional Tape Drive
setup?
The cost would definitely be lower than a Tape backup system in my
opinion.
What sort of backup systems are some of you running?
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Vikram
