i just installed debian sarge 7august 2004 version, on a partition on my pc.
*made sure* it did not install any bootloader in mbr.
rather, i let it install lilo in its own partition.

debian works okay.
i reboot, and in the pristine grub, try launching redhat8.

the root filesystem is checked, some 'duplicate label' error is
flashed on the screen, the root filesystem is remounted in read-only
mode. all this happens too fast to note it down accurately.

after that, a series of config files and log files and other files
that the sequence has to write in rw mode through 'touch' don't
happen.

finally, at starting system logger, the machine just freezes. though
eth0 does load ok.

i can boot into the pc with knoppix. i can even boot the pc okay with
mandrake and other distros on my pc, just that for some strange
reason, rh8 does not work.

the previous time i booted rh8, i did switch on wine to check out a
dos utility, that never worked.
stop! as i write this, i just realized that that goddam dos utility
must have tried to write some stuff to the hardisk sectors....

how can i fix my ext3 filesystem of redhat8? or is the problem somewhere else?

please help.

btw, i have run fsck and all ok.
have even booted as 'single' into redhat8.

from other parititions, do have access to my data and stuff, but am
not writing to it, *just* in case the filesystem is badly mauled.

???
