My answer is also the latter. But I do use the closed source drivers for
nvidia. And even though it is a pain to recompile the driver everytime there
is a kernel upgrade, I prefer that .. simply because just like me, each and
every other person who uses nvidia, feels the same pain. And this prompts all
of us to always ask our hardware wallahs for mobos and cards which dont have
nvidia in the future. Every time I have to recommend hardware to a customer
who plans to use Linux in graphical mode, I discourage him from buying
nvidia, and instead using freer drivers like s3 (I am not sure if ATI drivers
are open source or not).

My motorola c650 has the same hardware interface as yours. The worst thing
about motorola is that, leave alone linux, even for windows they *sell* the
syncing software for their phones. Nokia and Samsung makes them available
freely.
