[ I have started a new thread for this topic. Please use it for further
discussions. BTW anyone know why my mails to the list keep bouncing back?
Have had to manually post this...]

[Abhijeet Singh] - PII 266 MHz/ Tecra 8000/ Toshiba (256 MB/ 30 GB) running
SuSE 9.1 Personal. I would like to point out that I am a newbie "linuxer"
(is that the correct term??). I tried installing and running RH 9 on this
machine first, but just couldnât get the sound working. Everything else
worked just fine though. Still, I thought I'd give SuSE 9.1 a try as well
- to its credit it picked all the devices (including the sound card) right
off the bat. They have made it (SuSE 9.1) almost idiot proof! All in all
great system for someone migrating from M$...

> 1. hard disk controller
[Abhijeet Singh] - Using an IDE disk (so the controller is built into the
disk package, there would be an IDE interface on the motherboard though,
if thatâs what you are asking??)

> 2. Display card - Basic X windows and H/w 3-D accelerated X support,
> monitor resolution, etc.
[Abhijeet Singh] - Neomagic MagicGraph 256AV with 2MB VRAM - no 3-D
acceleration supported - currently running happily at 16 bit 1024x768

> 3. touch pad (and all other pointing device) support
[Abhijeet Singh] - AccuPoint - correctly detected & auto-configured during
installation. There is a port for an external PS2 mouse as well - havenât
tried it though...

> 4. Ethernet network card
[Abhijeet Singh] - PCMCIA Intel - correctly auto-detected during install -
running fine

> 5. Wireless network card
[Abhijeet Singh] - None :-(

> 6. power management functions - hibernation support, save/restore to
> disk/memory
[Abhijeet Singh] - Have not tried hibernation yet - but the battery/ power
management & auto shut down is working fine.

> 7. IRDA support
[Abhijeet Singh] - Installed fine but havenât tested it yet - so cannot
comment

> 8. Bluetooth/firewire etc. support
[Abhijeet Singh] - Itâs a vintage machine my friend, no Bluetooth/ firewire
etc. - Have 1 USB v.1 port though and that works just fine

[Abhijeet Singh] - was a gift so donât have a clue :-)

[Abhijeet Singh] let me add Point No. 9. - Sound card - Yamaha OPL-SAX 2/3 -
This was the problem area with RH9. I tried several fixes that I found online
- but nothing worked. The surprising thing was that this card was
actually listed in the sndconfig utility but it refused to detect or
configure it!! Anyway SuSE 9.1 cured my troubles.

Hope this info is of some use.

Cheers!
Abhijeet
