Ok i downloaded jabber for windows and Linux now what how to setup the
LAN , Which port to make it access and all the stuff ,
First you have to install the jabber server. There are many open source jabber server implementations, I have been using http://jabberd.jabberstudio.org/ at my place quite happily for 10 months now. Search for jabberd srpms (look for 1.XX version and not version 2.XX, since version 2 came out only sometime back and does not have good howtos on how to use it as yet ).
After you have have the srpms, have a look at the http://jabberd.jabberstudio.org/1.4/docs/howto.html . They give you a step by step process on how to install the jabber server. The doc suggest that you use a pre built binary, but that binary kept crashing on my system (iirc). If you can have those binaries working for you, great. However if those do not work, you will have to compile the srpms that you have downloaded above. the good thing about the SRPM is that it comes with a very well commented conf file.
After you have the server running, you have to configure the jabber clients on each PC that will use it. Miranda is a good jabber client and so is gaim. Have been using both without any trouble.
Assume me as a
dummy on networking . First time in my life got the chance to work on
LAN ,
I hope your boss know about this :-)
