System Administration is not a revenue generating department. whatever new setup any system admin makes, whatever process he introduce in the company Management will always take that as a part of his day to day job. On the other part if a person is into ASIC/FPGA/Programming, one good shot can generate huge revenues for the company and then its obvious that Management would like to provide a part of revenue to that genius programmer, to keep him on the board.
What i have realized is that, System Administrator can also find exponential graph but this graph grows with over all graph of the company. All and all, programmers/designers grows with growth of any particular project coz that depends on feedback of client. And System administrator can only grow when company is growing big, no client feedback, nothing. A 100 employee company can pay around 20K-25K to newly hired technically sound system administrator but can't afford to provide him exponential growth until and unless company can grow to 500-700 in 1-byres duration. In revenue generating department an employee can find growth, on delivery of a project, good feedback from client and if client is willing to provide another project to same team. Now a days there is a new hurdle for System Administrator. Majority of Big companies are outsourcing their System/Network/Security departments. Causing involvment of third party and again taking down the salary package. Companies like Wipro Spectramind, American Express etc are paying huge amount to their Vendors for outsourcing but on the other end these Vendor companies are paying peanuts to System Administrators.... Was reading an article in some business magazine, where it was stated that after 2010 we will find almost 90% companies will outsource their system admin department to third party vendors.
