That page has links to 2 VERY good VRML tutorials.
There are also the development papers at unige.ch.

However, the VRML 97 standard is now deprecated. X3D
is the enhanced successor to VRML, and will be in use
in some time. Till then, this standard and its related
tools are very much in the mainstream. But X3D can do
wonders.. its (obviously) much more advanced, and
streamlined than the original VRML.

PS, In case you're really interested in VRML
applications, I suggest you check out the VRML
exporter of a tool called POV-RAY. It allows the
ultimate in flexibility and features/power to make
your own VRML worlds.
