hi, i would second dinesh's pov. i have recntly deployed asterisk in a production environment in a call center and it really rocks! it has all that up-market commercial solutions like avaya have and new features are being added everyday. in fact, the call center had 1-800 numbers from a provider called kall8 and the integration with them was seamless because they also run asterisk!!! i am not clear about how sipX will help you with your VPN requirements; openVPN would be my best bet.
