Couple of issues for me with all BSD variants 1. I have never used it for any appreciable duration. Last time I used it it definitely was not very user friendly. I would also not be able to tweak it to the extent I could tweak a linux box. 2. I am not sure what is their level of support for USB and PCMCIA devices especially the ones in my laptop.
Some comments on reading the latest release note http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.4R/installation-i386.html It is scary to read "4.2 Common Installation Problems for i386 Architecture Users" I am making a wild guess - most if not all are not a problem on Linux. Just to confirm I am not doubting BSD's capability as a firewall but the fact that with BSD I might never get up and running or might have to live with a half baked installation.
