Even though GRASS is available under GNU/Linux, it
definatly is not for the faint hearted. I have been
researching on GRASS for some time now and with my
experience of GIS/Photogrammetry and surveying for the
last 14 yrs+, it does require more than just basic +
advanced understanding of GIS. 
Looking at Qgis...website ... that lookes feasible for
general GIS work. Presently d/l the s/w and
documentation. Can comment further only after
evaluating.
