funny isn't it? in contrast, you pick up even say a one-year-old knoppix, say knopix 3.6, which is also based on debian, and it will run alsa out-of-the-box, er... cd. debian sarge from the dvd defaults to OSS. fyi, i did a straightforward standard one-click Desktop install. during one install i tried custom, got thrown to the ncurses-based aptitute and a seemingly never-ending list of packages to choose from. i also use the agnula demudi distro, which is again based on debian. which runs JACK (jack audio connection kit) with alsa on a fine-tuned low-latency kernel and system. after several discussions with the Venerable Khurana, (he who is full of Emptiness), we concluded that perhaps debian sarge may default on alsa, but certainly not if run off one dvd. i'd recommend use the 2 or the 4 dvds and try again. imho, alsa for me, is *the* killer app, er, framework/architecture for sound, with gnulinux. no, alsa is not just a set of sound drivers. and jack, well go check it out.... ;-) niyam _______________________________________________ ilugd mailinglist -- [email protected] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/
