Well your friend is correct, it is indeed debian based. If you're looking at setting up a system to try out things before you do it on your server you should definitely go with centos or any other redhat based system. However, if u're looking at experimenting and expanding your horizons give a debian based distro a chance. For years I've been a redhat variant only guy, but took the plunge with ubuntu on desktop and debian on server and haven't looked back since. As far as the CD is concerned, I have the 32 bit but not the 64 bit. I believe Sudhev Sir might have one.
