Prospective guidance committee member for the student mentorship program

 Dear Madam/Sir,

The Indian Linux User's Group-Delhi (ILUG-D), in partnership with the Na-
tional Resource Centre for FOSS (NRCF), AU-KBC, Chennai, and Sarai,
CSDS, 29 Rajpur Road, Delhi, is starting a student mentorship program
targetting curricular projects by students in local colleges. The aim of the
program is to provide students with a helping hand in working on curricular
projects in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Mentors, drawn from a
pool of experienced FOSS developers from ILUG-D, will guide the students in
selecting projects, laying them out, modularizing them with associated
timelines for each module, and in getting the development work completed
within the given timeframe for the project. The students will also be
introduced
to FOSS philosophy and development practices; lack of familiarity with which
often proves to be a barrier for novice FOSS programmers. This work will be
done with the prior approval of involved colleges and teachers, to ensure that
the students get appropriate curricular credit.

We felt that the oversight of a guidance committee, with members that are fa-
miliar with and respected in the FOSS community, was essential to the
process. The committee will have complete control over selecting mentors and
projects, will continuously monitor mentor/student relationships in ongoing
projects, will have the responsibility of evaluating the performance of
mentors,
and will act as the court of final appeal for resolving any conflicts. Towards
this
end, we would like to invite you to act as a committee member, and would like
to meet with you soon in order to discuss details of the program. Please let us
know of a time convenient to you when we can get together.

                                    Sincerely,

                                    Raj Mathur
