Hi group,
I want to know if there are any network benchmark tools (esp. to know the
actual
data transfer rate) available for Linux esp. used by someone. One end of my
network contains a server, while at the other end there is a thin client. The
server is connected to a 1000 Mbps port, and the thin client is connected to a
100 Mbps port on the switch ( D-Link 1026-G ). When thin client boots up, the
kernel (Ubuntu Breezy for IA32) downloads very slow (takes around 2 minutes for
both vmlinuz and initrd.img) to download. After download completes and Linux
starts booting, the network link is reported to be as 100 Mbps, full-duplex at
the client end. At the server end it is reported as 1000 Mbps, full-duplex.
Also, I want some packet sniffer for Linux. I've tried Ethereal, and I'm
partially satisfied with it. The reason for partial satisfaction is that I also
want to know why some packets, are dropped by kernel (either error packets, or
rejected by firewall). If this is possible in Linux, and any open source packet
sniffer, does this please point me to the link.
Well thanx in advance,

P.S. I'm downloading Fedora Core 5 "AMD64" architecture via BitTorrent (using
BitTorrent for first time). Currently I've downloaded 26.3%, and I've listed
contents of the directory of downloads below:
-- begin dump --
[EMAIL PROTECTED] bordeaux-binary-x86_64]$ ls -lh *
-rw-rw-r-- 1 wahjava wahjava 638M Apr 4 04:23 FC-5-x86_64-disc1.iso
-rw-rw-r-- 1 wahjava wahjava 249M Apr 4 04:23 FC-5-x86_64-disc2.iso
-rw-rw-r-- 1 wahjava wahjava 0 Apr 2 01:41 FC-5-x86_64-disc3.iso
-rw-rw-r-- 1 wahjava wahjava 0 Apr 2 01:41 FC-5-x86_64-disc4.iso
-rw-rw-r-- 1 wahjava wahjava 0 Apr 2 01:41 FC-5-x86_64-disc5.iso
-rw-rw-r-- 1 wahjava wahjava 0 Apr 2 01:41 FC-5-x86_64-rescuecd.iso
-rw-rw-r-- 1 wahjava wahjava 0 Apr 2 01:41 SHA1SUM
-- end dump --
The file "FC-5-x86_64-disc1.iso" in above listing is 638 MiB (which is same as
in the file listing of torrent), and I want to know if it is successfully
downloaded, so that I can mount this ISO ? I've tried "file" utility and got
following:
-- begin dump --
[EMAIL PROTECTED] bordeaux-binary-x86_64]$ file *
FC-5-x86_64-disc1.iso: data
FC-5-x86_64-disc2.iso: ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data 'FC/5 x86_64
'
FC-5-x86_64-disc3.iso: empty
FC-5-x86_64-disc4.iso: empty
FC-5-x86_64-disc5.iso: empty
FC-5-x86_64-rescuecd.iso: empty
SHA1SUM: empty
-- end dump --
Is it possible to know whether FC-5-x86_64-disc1.iso is corrupted in the
download or not, without waiting for whole download (torrent) to finish ? I
doubt if my file is already corrupted. I've separately download SHA1SUM from
Fedora site for these ISOs and verified FC-5-x86_64-disc1.iso but it failed.
Thanx again
