BB email handling works on standard POP/IMAP/SMTP - Yes. However that is 
not true for the push technology or the mailbox polling technology it 
uses. That's proprietary stuff. As of this instant BB servers can poll 
exchange, lotus notes and novell servers. Last I spoke to my friends 
over at RIM i heard they were working on integrating it with atleast one 
popular open source product (not sure which one they eventually 
shortlisted).
