In the end solution was to ignore evdev etc. and just plain add the
following section in /etx/X11/xorg.conf file:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
**********
The M$Optical mouse is now working happily.
