Putting it together .. it seems like you  someone played with BIOS settings
for
your hard disk .. the one that says use CHS/LBA etc.

or you recompiled your vmlinuz/initrd,  didn't listned to kind advice of
having
a initial /boot partition, and ended up placing it towards the end of hard
disk.
