Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT) was setup
by the Government of India in October 1961,for the purpose of evolving
uniform terminology in Hindi and other modern Indian languages and for
production of text books, supplementary reading material and reference
literature in all disciplines so as to facilitate smooth, change over
of medium of instruction in universities. It functions under the
ministry of HRD (Department of Higher Education), Government of India.
The main activities of CSTT include organization of terminology work
shops/orientation programs and computerization of terminology and its
access on the website. Production of university level books, digest,
monographs and definitional dictionaries and journals are also
important activities of the CSTT.

About the Seminar

We are in the middle of technological revolution nucleated around
information & communication technology (ICT). ICT is an enabling
technology. It can ensure transparency of information. ICT enabled
governance, learning, health - care & business will thus spur
Socio-economic development at extraordinary pace. Advances in human
language technology will offer nearly universal access to information
& services to more and more people in their own languages. Today most
of the content on the web is in English, which is spoken by only 8-10%
of the world population. India is a multi-lingual, multi-script
country. There are hundreds of dialects spoken in various parts of the
country. Then there are languages, which have only oral tradition.
Besides a large portion of the Indian population is illiterate.
Therefore for wide spread proliferation of the benefits of ICT to the
masses, there is a need for the development of necessary technologies
(both H/w and S/w) for content creation & localization in Indian
languages. To accomplish this objective already several initiatives
have been taken at the academic, institutional, corporate, Government
& individual levels. However for achieving the objective of digital
unite & knowledge for all we need to develop information processing
tools to facilitate human machine interaction in Indian languages and
to create & access multi-lingual knowledge resources / content, major
initiatives are also required towards localization, standardization &
utilization of open source software.

The forthcoming national seminar is to take stock of the situation and
to provide a forum for exchange of the views on challenges and
strategies associated with technological development for content
creation & localization in Indian languages.
