This opens the desktop environment of the local machine. I was
thinking of starting it from the remote machine so that I would get
the start menu etc of the remote machine.

But may be all this is not worth it after all. For example, it will
perhaps mess up things on F7 as well because the DISPLAY variable will
now be directed to F12. It did something like that when I did
"startx -- :5" from F1. I was unable to open emacs on F7 after that. I
promptly shut the x-server on F12 and restarted it on F7:)

A non-starter perhaps. Sorry.
