By this statement, you are misleading the list. As I mentioned in my earlier mail, Opensolaris is under CDDL which is a OSI approved license. Read this to get clarification: http://www.opensolaris.org/os/licensing/ The binary licensing FAQ is here: http://www.opensolaris.org/os/about/faq/binary_licensing_faq/#what-bcl The components not released as source are mentioned here. More or less, they are some drivers etc. As such, in this context, if we take Linux as FOSS, Opensolaris can also be taken as FOSS http://www.opensolaris.org/os/about/no_source/ >From whatever I could understand from these licensing and other documents from the Opensolaris website, this is what I could reach to : Opensolaris IS FOSS (CDDL is OSI approved) when you get the various modules, components individually from the sources. However, when it comes to the CD/DVD, it DOES contain some binary components whose sources are not there in the Opensolaris project. As such, the CD/DVD DOES NOT remain completely as FOSS. Probably, this is similar to Ubuntu which contains proprietory components for video and may be some other drivers. ( I am not Ubuntu user and can not comment on this as I have not installed it. Please correct me if wrong.) @Angad, I think you should have taken this thread on the Opensolaris forum with some references and not just asking directly if Opensolaris is FOSS or not. You can probably, still take the synopsis of this thread to the other forum and seek answer again. Can we stop this thread here? I do not see any further fruitful discussion.
