Hi All,
How can I have a generic way of knowing the name & version of a distro?
As my work area is SLES & RHEL, I thought of using */etc/issue (*or */etc/
issue.net) *or */etc/redhat-release *or */etc/SuSE-release
*
Another way is, using* *the command* lsb_release -d ,* which works even on
Hardy*.
*As I liked it more, so, my query changes to:
Can I assume lsb_release to be there on every Linux distro ?
I assume because LSB means Linux Standard Base and their web site says
"*Currently
all major distributions comply with the LSB ...*" (
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/LSB) and have another link to
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/lsb-cert/productdir.php?by_lsb

Seeking inputs.

Thanks in anticipation
