i've been sending inkscape output to pre-press since almost two years,
for professional projects.
here's how:

00. save a 'press version' of the original file.
01. convert all text to paths.
02. save as eps. then, also save as pdf.
03. for good measure, save as *.png, with a resolution of 300ppi. open
gimp, flatten layers, and save as *.jpg.

have successfully outputted thus at various pre-press bureau with
zilch problems.
