       I'm unable to understand your issue/question .

Also I don't have any knowledge/expertise on the redhat (rpm) side.

The question you asked though is something to do with x windows and
desktop and icons but haven't given what do you actually want to do.

I dunno which version of xwindows/ xfree86/X.org you are using?

On a desktop distribution like Ubuntu/Debian usually you have a
/home/<username>/Desktop directory/folder available. Deleting that
file/folder or any icons therein should result into no icons on the
Desktop.
