Nowadays, I am happier with the web interface provided through GeoDjango, but that is mostly for developer needs, rather than the end-user needs catered to by GRASS and QGIS. What introduction to you need? Both GRASS, and QGIS seemed to have decent documentation. I would suggest just jumping into a problem that you wish to address. Could you give us some more details about what you are working on? We are also doing some GPS/GIS stuff, and there are also people here with interests in projects like OpenStreetMap. Maybe we should get together for a meeting.
