As far as Mandriva is concerned, try using the VESA drivers to start X. You 
can launch the Mdv X configuration tool from the command line using the 
XFdrake command and make the changes. 

Later, you can install the NVIDIA proprietary drivers for X from the 
Mandriva's non-free repo. It'll automatically prompt for installing the driver 
when you reconfigure X again from MCC (provided you've set-up your software 
repositories).
