There is also apparently a lot one can do with online samples
that are publicly available. How about we put this off for a
little while, until such time as someone on this list has enough
expertise to walk others through the process of getting started.

Sure, but someone needs to take the initiative in setting this up.
As per the ILUG-D rule, since you brought it up, you have been
volunteered :-)

One libre alternative that we have tried is http://giss.tv/ . If you
have a webcam on your local machine, you can try setting up a
channel (we could have an "official" ILUG-D channel, and arrange on
a time to test it out beforehand).
