Yeah the default fonts are too small. You might want to try C64 8x8 bitmap
fonts with pico, although it will make the display effectively  32x8, still
good for 8 lines. If you want to go still larger, C64 font editors are
freely available on net, just enlarge the 8x8 to 16x16 (iirc it has to be a
multiple of 8).

I haven't tried it but i think any bitmap font should work, you can get NES
or Commodore fonts on the net and try displaying them via lcdproc.
