The frequency and variation of these invites (esp. from well-known sites like linkedin) suggests that that's not what this is. Much more likely is people who've added people to their addressbooks with the mailing list address as contact info.
I'm actually genuinely interested in understanding how this works. How do the invites get through to the mailing list? Are all the sender addresses ([email protected] in this case) subscribed?
