As part of the SlideShare operations team, you'll play a key role in
the design, deployment & scalability of a global scale web
application.
Job Profile includes
- Working with open source technologies to manage the SlideShare
cluster of servers that run on Ruby on Rails, FreeBSD, Debian, Amazon
S3 & EC2.
And we work with tools like Puppet, MemCached, Varnish,
TokyoCabinet, HAProxy, Nagios, Cacti, Ganglia, and MySQL.
- Responsibility for helping scale SlideShare to hundreds of servers,
using automation, virtualization, and cloud computing technologies.
SlideShare is a big user of cloud technologies like Amazon EC2, SQS,
S3, so you'd get to work extensively on these.
- Responsibility for keeping SlideShare server side performance speedy
and top notch.
This will include performance optimisations, DB tuning, and other
problems that might progressively slow down the site as it grows
globally.
- Regular web operations: Setting up and managing servers,
troubleshooting networks, mail servers, monitor server logs, generate
site statistics,
coordinate releases, tweak NFS configs, spot & eliminate
bottlenecks, server surveillance, security & intrusion detection etc.
Our Operations team is still small; hence you can play a pivotal role
in architecting and defining its future scope.

Candidate Profile:
- Preferably B.Tech in Comp Science and/or other system related
technical degrees/diplomas
- 2 to 6 years exp in a software/internet company in similar role
- You should speak native Linux and have hands-on operations
experience with a large server cluster.
- You MUST be enthusiastic about systems automation (we love Puppet,
Chef or CFEngine experience will also give you the right philosophical
background).
We don't believe ops should spend all day firefighting and doing
chores to keep the system healthy.
We believe ops should create valuable intellectual property the way
software engineers do.
