You would require libnotify for this. In earlier versions of Ubuntu (9.04 & 10.04), it came as a separate plugin. You had to do some changes in a file to make Thunderbird visible. However, from what I had seen in some of the posts, in 10.10, the thunderbird libnotify has been integrated, though never tried myself.
