I think that it will be difficult to find someone who is knowledgeable enough, and has the time, patience, and skill to act as a mentor. If you want that, I would suggest looking at programmes like the Google Summer of Code: http://code.google.com/soc/ . Alternatively, as Nandeep pointed out, you need to narrow down your focus still further: An "interest in algorithms" could mean almost anything. * First, pick an area. From the above description of your interests, it could be, say, databases, or kernel-level programming. * Identify a FOSS project in the area. E.g., for databases, you could look at: - MariaDB, which is derived from mysql. - Any of the various NoSQL databases that are coming up. Graph databases, for example, are interesting and potentially can be used in many areas. * Look through the roadmap for the project, and see if you can find a small project that interests you. * Once you have a decent idea of what you want to do, you can ask for guidance on the project mailing list. It makes sense to lurk on the list for a while, so as to get a feel for the project. * Another way of quickly getting involved is to look at bugs in the project's issue tracker, and start trying to solve them. This is a good way to get familiar with the code, and to gain some credentials with the project.
