Are the power management settings in Win7 and Ubuntu in the same "ball park"? It could also be a buggy BIOS for which SONY has Win7 workarounds integrated into the OEM Win7 install. Your Ubuntu does not have the privilege to that work around. Needles to mention that SONY will not admit to it. Just last week, I had to deal with a "damaged" install of the OEM Win7 on a VAIO. The Sony Tech Support guy explicitly told me to turn OFF MS Auto Updates.
