I also prefer Debian (testing) purely due to it being kind of first rolling release distribution, Debian's social contract <http://www.debian.org/social_contract> and stability inspired me to use Debian. However, I recommend LinuxMint XFCE or ATE <http://www.linuxmint.com/> for the beginners.
