Ohh well personal experience I guess. I am a sysadmin and ofcourse I
dont really get involved in purchasing but I can assure you I have seen
enuff IDE hard disk conk out on me to last me a lifetime. I have seen a
SCSI disk also go bad on me can you imagine 20K hard disk dying on you
without a AMC. I tell you no one was happy :). Guess what last time I
said that someone from Seagate wrote me a personl email saying that he
would like to explore it. I wrote back with all the serial numbers I
could lay my hand on and he simply dissapeared so I guess Seagate is not
much interested as to what my personal opinion might be worth ;).
Reminds me I have seen laptop hard disks die too - they were IBM once
though with full warranty and works so.. no one cried over it :).
Value for money ? Yah they probably are till they die on you with your
data. Unfortunately not everyone can justify the value of their data to
go for a tape backup.
My personal choice for hard disk - none actually if you can afford it go
for SCSI with RAID but then I am writting this email while my IDE
Seagate Hard disk is peacefully sleeping without any complains. The
email will ofcourse go to a Mailserver running on a Seagate SCSI hard
disk (on RAID obviously). So no Seagate isnt that bad probably but just
because there are so many customers you actually get to find out what
kind of reliability IDE hard disks can offer. Just make sure you can get
a fast replacement - whatever brand you opt to buy. Personal data in
crashed hard disk is like spilled milk - dont cry over it ;).
