ashim

firstly, pls send txt mail if possible (i.e. turn off default html
formatting).

secondly, pls do look up an excellent online tutorial on LaTeX developed
wholly indigenously in trivendrum, by the india tex user group team. this
is at http://www.tug.org.in/tutorials.html

thirdly, as regards miktex etc- pls remember that TeX is the original
program developed by D.E. Knuth in 1979 or so. this program can run on any
number of platforms. LaTeX, revtex, auctex etc are all add-ons, or macros
which make it easier to use TeX. some people wrongly think of LaTeX as
being totally distinct from TeX.

miktex, emtex, 4tex, teTeX etc are all implementations of
TeX/LaTeX/revtex/auctex systems. these implementations are all platform
dependent. miktex i believe works on NT/Win2k etc. emtex works on MSDOS
and OS2. 4tex works on NT/Win/MSDOS. these implementations come with
compiled binaries, and if GPL'ed, with source code also. there are also
commercial implementations of TeX/LaTeX etc. some of these are Textures
(for Mac) and Scientific Word (Win), and PCTeX.

hope this helps.
best,
akr.
