Hey all..am back on the list after quite a while! Kapil-Crypto is an extremely dense (and large) topic..If you want to do a project, i suggest you scour around the web and talk to people on irc.openprojects #crypto for getting a general idea.
As for specifics, you could try implementing one of the various algorithms in c++, or you could make an encryption program based on a derivative of any algorithm you like (and are able to implement..!). To implement it however, you should definitely have a strong mathematics background and have knowledge of several basic algorithms. Try about.com for a general overview. Oh, and get any good books (ebook or otherwise) by Donald knuth on the topics. The handbook of applied cryptography is also a very very good resource. Last i saw (about 6 months ago), it was available for free download. Just google it!
