That was meant to be a sarcastic comment,
I actually think it should be called
GNU/Linux. And I know the GNU philosophy and
the stuff. I just replied to a mail that
started talking about Unix and Multics ...
BTW, I do work on the development of GCC and
related tools, so I have much more reason to
call it GNU/Linux.
The basic kernel as it is, is almost useless
without the tools that are associated with
it. In fact, even the kernel needs to be
compiled (unless, of course, some idiot
believes, in today's environment, that they
would write machine code, even assembly
code requires an assembler ;-)).
Most of the tools are provided by FSF, including
some really important ones like Binutils, GCC,
GDB etc. It is part of the GNU project.
But then, I do not want to push Linux or GNU/Linux
down anyone's throat. In the end, GNU can exist
without Linux and Linux can too, but it would be
almost useless. I guess, MAC OS/X uses a port of
the Free BSD Kernel. And number of GNU tools are
ported for that too.
Thanks and Regards,
Venky
