start gnome. then open the gnome system monitor (Mandrake ->
Applications -> Monitoring -> GNOME System Monitor)
then show all processes. there'd be a process called "esd". try
ending/killing that process. when there's no esd process left and yu're
not running any audio app (xmms etc.), then open audio mixer (Mandrake
-> Multimedia -> Sound -> Audio Mixer). make sure volume is at the top
for all.
then start xine and see if yu face any probs. also make sure you've
volume at the max in xine.

and avoid sending HTML mails to the list.
