i got myself a dlink internal modem which describes itself as follows

surpsisingly it came with a linux driver - which i just untar'd and ran the
make install. that's when the screen went all gobble-de-gook. upon which i
did a reset screen - and then ran the hsfconfig. it said that driver does
not support SMP kernels (mine is 2.2.15 SMP, running debian. don't ask me
why i included the SMP option. let's say it just happened.)
so i used a trick. i booted with 2.2.20 non SMP kernel, and then repeated
above steps. and lo and behold - the hsfconfig worked (using 2.2.15
libraries). i.e. it created /dev/ttyHSF0 with sim link to /dev/modem etc.
but then running wvdial i found that "no modem found".
so i am stuck with a modem that i can't use from linux. i have been to
linmodem.org and all the asorted links mentioned. i am reluctant to do a
major kernel upgrade. (i guess i will have to, one of these days).
so how do i get my modem working?
