I run Fedora Core 4 on an AMD Athlon Machine with the LVM Filesystem. Till recently I was able to install (compile and then make install successfully) but recently after reinstalling the entire distro due to certain reasons I am not able to install the tar files anymore.
When I do the following from the directory after untarring (say /home/theju/openldap-2.x.y.z)(say) $./configure --options $make $su root -c make install The executables (if you can call them so )are getting installed in that particular directory only /home/theju/openldap-2.x.y.z instead of their default place of something like /usr/local/ ... I have also tried ./configure --bin-dir /usr/local/bin and the like but that too fails. Then when I log in as root repeat the whole procedure of $./configure $make $make install The executables get installed at the right place. But i have read somewhere that you should not run the whole process under root since there can be permissioning problem later. I had the same problem for Openldap, Courier, GNU-Chess and many more (luckily rpm's are installing) Please advice Thanks in advance Thejaswi Puthraya ------------------------ Yahoo!
