Underscore and Dot are NOT valid characters in unix usernames.
Dont know how the hell ubuntu allows you to create users like that
Create users in something like an ldap db
or
Create users with something like the student id, or a short name etc -
and use mailserver features like mailertables etc to map that to the
guy's firstname.lastname or firstname_lastname
