1. Problem with display and Printer.

I installed linux on my machine with configuration AMD
Athlon 3800+ 128 bit processor
128bit? Are you sure? :-)
The
installation went on smoothly and after rebooting just when the splash
screen comes before asking for login monitor started flickering and
continued on and on. I tried changing various resolutions and Refresh rates
but no effect. After installing I tried changing the monitor with a
normal CRT monitor but it was of no use.
kc: I would suggest that you do a text install and choose not to have Graphics
on boot up. That way you will have a functioning system though without
graphics. we can solve the graphics problem with lesser reboots - if you know
what I mean. Anyway try with the most basic config - 600x400 and VGA with 256
colours. If even this does not work, this will need more elbow grease.
But Fedora 7 and Debain 4.0 went on well but I couldn't
configure the printer and network connection which are of utmost
importance. My printer is a HP LaserJet 1018 DN black and white printer (
Connected through USB). These OS's detected the printer but its not printing.
When I checked the print queue it said job stopped. Do I need to do any
configuration if my printer is connected through USB?
kc: Usually you need to configure CUPS - try configuring this. Most HP printers
are well supported for printing. Scanning and fax are not very well supported
for all models but basic printing is pretty good. The only help I can give here
is - try the forums/google for Fedora/Ubuntu. These two have pretty good
support for hardware.
The problem
with network is : I have configured entire IP address, Subnet Mask,
Gateway and DNS servers too correctly (worked very well in Windows) but I am
unable to browse. I couldn't even ping to my default gateway. But
when I did ifconfig it showed every thing correctly.
I'll be relieved if someone can help me in this regard.
kc: Did you make sure that the interface is configured to come up at boot time?
Do you use a dialer to connect to ISP? Is your connection always on or do you
need to feed in user/passwd?
Run this command as root and tell me what is the result: "service network
restart". If this seems fine, do a self ping - ping localhost, ping the self IP
address of machine. If you are able to ping the self IP address successfully
but not other machines on LAN, there might be a cabling/connection/jack
problem. If you are connecting directly to cable/DSL modem, try using DHCP -
this is usually the best way. Else for static IP, see if you can ping the
router/modem. if problem persists, give more details like ISP provider and your
windows setup so that I can diagonise better.
