I had tried to install and boot from a USB pen drive on my HP dv9000 series laptop and it worked basically set the boot priority to boot from USB / external HDD before the internal HDD next install as you would usually do on to the external drive when the drive is connected, it would boot from it else it would boot from the internal drive just be careful with installing the bootloader
