The purpose of the longer plug is to get power to the microphone - there's actually a
small pre-amp built in. But if the input signal is sufficiently boosted, a standard
3-conductor miniplug can be used. So an alternative to buying a PlainTalk mic is to
use some sort of external pre-amp (or amplifier with pre-amp outputs), and plug it
into the iMac with a 3-conductor miniplug adapter (most likely this would be in the
form of a 2- RCA phono plug to 3-conductor miniplug adapter). I've been copying old
cassette tapes to CD-Rs, and the output of the tape deck is sufficient.
Good luck.
