Thanks Ilene for your research and knowledge. Much appreciated. Yes iMac Update 1.1 is still available from apple support. Unfortunately it will only install if you are running OS 8.5.
The correct update for 8.1 is iMac Update 1.0 However it is not available from apple's website and must be obtained from someone's private archives. Hence my appeal. A cautionary note regarding iMac Update 1.0 is that it must be installed only on OS 8.1. Installing it on 8.5 and possibly higher will cause the system to refuse to boot.
