I'm sure that everyone on these lists (except me) knew about this 
long ago but just in case, I thought I should post this to remind 
those who didn't know or had forgotten about it after a system 
re-install.

The factory settings for your iMac screen give you TWO black squares 
around your viewable area: a pitch black outer one that you can't do 
anything about and a black/grey inner one that you can increase your 
viewable area to cover.

The setting to address this is in the "Monitors and Sounds" control 
panel and when you get there you need to click on the "Geometry" icon 
at the upper right of the panel.  After that, play around with the 
"Height/Width" and "Position" buttons until you have maximized your 
screen.  It doesn't stretch the images, you just get a larger 
viewable area.

I'm really embarrassed that I didn't do this a long, long time ago.
