I had the exact same thing happen to my Rev B (233 mhz Imac).  It was 
working fine then all of a sudden it shut off and I could hear sparking 
sounds coming from the back. I believe it was the video card that went. 
There is nothing you can really do but take it in for service.  It cost 
me nothing to get it fixed as I had  bought the Applecare plan only two 
weeks before but they told me it would have cost $260.00 (cdn) to get it 
fixed had I not had the plan. The service tech told me the sparking 
sounds are a result of the video card shorting out.  It is not a sound 
you want to hear coming from your computer.

I would call your local service repair center and talk to them about it.
