Odd that the battery should need replacing as these
iMacs aren't old. There were a couple of batches in
2001 that need a tiny bit of software downloading from
the apple.com site to preserve the battery from
premature early retirement.  Anyway....

Replacing the battery can be done with NO
dismantling if very careful.

>From my (abysmal) memory these are the key points;
Earth yourself before poking around inside.

The wee battery is just inside the RAM/Airport door -
tantalisingly just out of reach. But with care you
can unseat one end of it with a slim screwdriver then
lift it out with needle nosed pliers. Dicey but with
luck very quick. The new one can be pressed home by
finger power. (The effort required to push down makes
you realise these batteries aren't likely to move in
transit!)

 Just be careful and take your time! Best of luck.
Pete
