Ive had the same experience in that my new iMac won't boot from anything without a 9.1 OS System folder or newer. It usually freezes at the point where its maybe checking the memory. Doesn't solve your problem but you could try burning a disk with a 9.2 folder and your utilities and then try to boot up from that disk.
